Mammoth Cave National Park holds teacher workshops thanks to Friends of Mammoth Cave and State Farm

MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky., August 3rd, 2020 – Mammoth Cave National Park Environmental Education Program held four overnight teacher workshops in conjunction with The Friends of Mammoth Cave National Park (Friends). The workshops were funded through a State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Education grant of $6,000 which was received by Friends at the beginning of 2020.

Workshop participants learned the importance of water in a karst ecosystem and will return to their own classrooms with knowledge of the karst geology of the Mammoth Cave area. The workshop included hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities including pond studies and water quality monitoring. All recipients received multiple supplies for their classrooms including pH and dissolved oxygen kits to share with their students along with meals and lodging included through the grant from State Farm.

“The park is so grateful to both the Friends group and State Farm,” said the head of Mammoth Cave’s Environmental Education Program, Jennifer Shackelford. “Over the course of the past few weeks we have worked with 30 amazing local teachers. It was such a pleasure to meet each of them and introduce them to the educational opportunities that are found within Mammoth Cave National Park - both above and below ground.”
