Volunteer with AmeriCorps NCCC at Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave, Ky. - An AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team from Vinton, Iowa, is hosting a community service day with Mammoth Cave National Park (NP) and Friends of Mammoth Cave (FOMC) as part of the National Park Service’s commemoration of the 400 years of African American history in the United States. The event is being held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Central Time in the Mammoth Cave Training Center at 61 Maintenance Road, Mammoth Cave, KY 42259.

This Community Service Day is a way to increase awareness in the community related to the Bransford family, many of which lay to rest in the Bransford Cemetery. The Bransford family has played an important role in the history of Mammoth Cave, as members of their family have served as cave guides and explorers over several generations.

Volunteers are needed to help clear a pathway to cemetery prepare for the installation of a large granite memorial honoring the family members and their contribution to the Mammoth Cave National Park. Work will entail clearing brush with loppers and cutting/moving sections of fallen trees with handsaws.

A project and safety briefing will follow registration at the training center, after which the group will caravan to the Bransford Cemetery (15-minute drive from the training center). Volunteers will need to prepare for field work in cold/damp weather. Dress in layers of clothing that you do not mind getting dirty: long pants, long sleeve shirt, coat, rain jacket, and sturdy closed-toed footwear. Volunteers will need to bring work gloves, lunch and snacks to eat on-site, reusable water bottles (water cooler will be provided for refills), portable/folding chair (optional).
