Support
for memorable multi-cultural,
multi-generational visitor experiences to
Mammoth Cave National Park
-
$1.4 million to construct visitor center exhibits in
conjunction with the completion of Phase II Construction.
Phase I of the Visitor Center will be under construction
in 2007, and Phase II of construction is scheduled to
commence in 2009 or 2010. Since all funding for the
visitor center is derived from fee revenues, the funding
for visitor center exhibits would not be available until
at least 2010. Under the current schedule, the building
would be completed without exhibits (4,000 square feet
has been set aside for exhibits).
A. Completing the visitor center rehabilitation is
a signature project, and its important to complete the
project in its entirety.
B. Providing a world class visitor exhibit
area is needed to educate visitors on the natural and
cultural history of the largest cave system on earth.
-
$250,000 to $1,000,000+ to provide access to Mammoth
Cave for wheel-chair users and for other people with
disabilities. This project would provide funding
for the construction of the necessary improvements to
provide an accessible cave tour. A feasibility study
scheduled for 2008 will determine where and how an
accessible cave tour should be offered. Subsequently,
there will be a need to obtain the necessary funding to
complete the project.
A. All visitors should have the opportunity
to visit Mammoth Cave National Park.
B. To comply with the Americans with
Disabilities act and other related laws, Mammoth Cave
National Park needs to be accessible.
-
$9,500 to develop GPS “geo-cache trail” & trail guide on
the surface in the park headquarters developed area,
tracing the subterranean route of the Historic Cave
Tour. Certain waypoints can be linked with a MP3
file to provide interpretation of specific subterranean
features in relation to surface topography and landform
features.
-
$19,530 for three river access panels and six
backcountry trailhead panels. The river access
panels would provide a map of the river and also talk
about the biodiversity of the Green River and the
importance of the river to the region’s karst
hydrogeology. The trailhead panels would provide a map
of the trail system along with safety, trail etiquette,
and resource protection messages.
-
$5,000 - $15,000 to establish a Mammoth Cave Festival
event, perhaps with some of the elements of the
Earthspeak Program (music, crafts, folklore, etc.)
