Developing partnership opportunities and linkages between
Mammoth Cave National Park and the
surrounding communities in the Caveland Region.

  • $10,000 - $108,000 to facilitate cartography and mapping of Mammoth Cave.  This project would support the surveying effort with the purchase of equipment such as laser distance meters, field GPS units, surveying instruments, and a Lasertech Impulse Laser with tripod.  A GIS computer and associated software and printer/plotter capability is also needed.  Finally, there is a need to support cave-mapping cartography with the necessary software and hardware.  This project would be implemented in cooperation with the Cave Research Foundation.

  • $5,000 to $10,000 to for plantings along the main visitor entry corridor between facilitate Cave City and the Mammoth Cave National Park Visitor Center.  The park and Cave City have established a partnership to plant red buds and dogwoods along the 10-mile entrance road.  In concert with the approved landscaping plan, this project would purchase the seedlings to be planted.

  • $5,000 to $10,000+ to perform five sinkhole clean-ups in the three-county watershed area of Mammoth Cave National Park.  These funds will be used to develop a partnership with the American Cave and Conservation Association to expand the “Don’t Mess with Mammoth” program.  Funding will contribute towards obtaining dumpsters for clean-up days that will largely be performed with volunteer labor.

  • Connect the Hike & Bike Trail to Adjacent Communities.  The 10-mile Mammoth Cave Hike and Bike Trail is nearing completion.  This trail links the park visitor center with a short bike trail in adjacent Park City.  The trail provides a significant recreational amenity to park visitors.  Extending the hike and bike trail to both Cave City and Brownsville would further enhance bicycling and hiking opportunities within Mammoth Cave National Park.  In addition, this project would provide a linkage to adjacent communities.

  • $10,000 to establish additional park & area photos for display at the Hart County Rest Area.  Presently, the Rest Area only has photo displays in one quadrant.  Implementation of this project would require negotiations with both the Hart County Tourism Commission and the Transportation Cabinet to obtain their support for this project.

  • $10,000+ for a targeted TV and Radio Marketing effort, both for Mammoth Cave National Park and Caveland Region.  TV and Radio spots would be targeted to Kentucky residents, who are not visiting Mammoth Cave National Park as frequently as in the past.  The spots would highlight reasons for a return visit (new cave tour offerings, facilities, experiences).  This marketing effort would also market and promote the Caveland Region.

  • $10,000 for one Western Kentucky University intern to work at the BRADD Office on duties related to the International Biosphere Reserve Program, with a particularly emphasis on compiling growth trends and environmental trends within the Mammoth Cave Area Biosphere Reserve.

** The cost estimates identified above provide a general estimate for all of the above park projects and programs in need of funding support.  Once any project or proposal is identified for potential fundraising, the park would then commit to providing a much more-detailed cost estimate and implementation plan.
